With low levels of crime, robbery and assault, Dubai is generally a very safe place for tourists to visit. However, it's always sensible to take precautions to keep yourself out of harm's way, and to avoid any unnecessary risks. In particular, you should take special care on the roads, in the water and in the desert.

Dubai is generally a very safe place to visit, experiencing very low levels of crime. More than a million visitors from Britain head to Dubai each year, with more than 100,000 Britons resident there, and the vast majority of their experiences are completely trouble-free. However – as with any holiday – it is always worth taking sensible precautions to keep yourself safe, so that you can enjoy a relaxing, stress-free stay.

As in any other city, you should look after your belongings. Don’t accept lifts from strangers and use only licensed taxis. Take particular care if you’re out late at night on your own, or if you’ve consumed alcohol. Remember, sexual activity outside marriage is illegal here – so don’t take any chances.

Down on the beach, the biggest risk is probably from sunburn. However, you should also take care if heading out into the water, as strong currents and rip tides can occur in any location – even when the water appears quite calm. Don’t swim unless you’re at an approved beach, and obey any warning signs or red flags on display. Don’t swim in the creek, and if taking a boat trip make sure that life jackets are available for all passengers.

If you rent a car during your holiday, you can drive it with your UK licence. However, driving standards are not great in Dubai, and unfortunately road traffic accidents are not uncommon. Both drivers and pedestrians should therefore take extra care when using or crossing roads in the city. It is a criminal offence in Dubai to drive after consuming any quantity of alcohol – no matter how small the amount. Drink driving, along with offensive gestures and bad language directed at other drivers, can lead to serious punishment. If you’re involved in a road accident in Dubai, it’s important to call the police, and do not to leave the scene until authorised to do so.

If you plan to head out to the desert during your Dubai trip, it’s best to do so only as part of an organised excursion. Travel in convoy, take plenty of water and a mobile phone, and give your friends or family a copy of your travel plans.
