In a city famed for its sprawling, luxurious shopping malls, excellent restaurants and first class hotels, it's essential to know how to buy and pay for things during your trip to Dubai. The local currency is the dirham, and you will need cash and coins for taxis, tourist markets and coffee shops. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and shopping malls, and cash machines are plentiful.

The local currency in Dubai is the United Arab Emirate dirham, which is worth around 17-18 British pence. That makes one British pound worth around five to six dirhams – although this can vary as the dirham is pegged to the US dollar. You may see the currency variously written as AED, HH or Dh – all of which refer to the same thing. Cash in Dubai comes in different coloured notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 dirhams. There are also coins of values between one dirham and one fil (which is one hundredth of a dirham).

Much of the commerce in central Dubai is focused around credit cards, with Visa, MasterCard and American Express widely accepted in the city’s shopping malls, hotels and major restaurants. You will, however, need some cash and small change for taxis, tourist markets, coffee shops and other low-cost purchases. Cash machines are widely available in the city’s banks, hotels and malls. You are advised to inform your bank or credit card company before travelling, as some companies place automatic blocks on cards when unusual activity is detected, such as overseas purchases. You should also make a note of your card numbers and the contact details of your bank, and keep these in a safe place in case of emergency.

As you may expect in a city that boasts some of the world’s most luxurious hotels, Dubai can be a relatively expensive place to visit. Budget hotel rooms start from around Dh300-400, with prices in excess of Dh800 for four-star hotels and above. A mid-range restaurant may charge around Dh80 for a two course meal, with cheaper alternatives available in smaller establishments, food courts and markets. A meal with wine at a high-end restaurant can cost from Dh400 upwards.

Dubai’s traditional souks are an important part of its culture, and bartering over price here is acceptable – and even encouraged. Offering to pay in cash at the souks can sometimes help you to secure a better bargain. Some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions can charge from around Dh100 to 200 for entry. Passes at the popular Ski Dubai, for example, start at Dh250.
