Health services in Dubai

Dubai enjoys very high standards of health and healthcare facilities. Medical services are plentiful, and the doctors and nurses here are highly trained and speak English. In the unfortunate event that you are unwell, your hotel will be able to call a doctor to your room. The city also has numerous hospitals, dentists, pharmacies and walk-in clinics.

It is highly recommended that your travel insurance covers medical costs, as healthcare charges can be high in Dubai – with the exception of emergency treatment at public hospitals, which is free of charge. If you do need treatment during your stay in Dubai, you will be reassured to know that medical procedures, the use of sterilised needles and the provision of blood transfusions are all completed to high international standards and are very reliable.

There are no endemic health concerns in Dubai, and no special immunisations are required. Polio has been eradicated, hepatitis is very rare, and malaria is not considered to be a risk here. There are very few mosquitoes in the city, but if you are thinking of making trips elsewhere – such as into the mountains – you should take precautions to reduce the risk of bites.

Perhaps the most serious health risks in Dubai – especially for those more used to cooler climates such as Britain’s – are those posed by the sun and heat. Sunburn, heatstroke and heat exhaustion are a risk all year round, particularly for those who are at high risk such as young children or the elderly. To ensure you have a safe, happy stay in Dubai, make use of high factor sunscreen, sunglasses and hats when spending time outdoors. Cover up in the sun, and head indoors when the heat is at its highest.

Travellers with disabilities will find specially adapted rooms at several hotels, and good access and facilities are available at the airport and major shopping malls. Dubai provides disabled parking spaces to make it easier for those with mobility problems to get around. Dubai’s Transport Taxis are also specially adapted to accommodate wheelchairs.

Health risks can, of course, strike anywhere. In Dubai, should the worst happen, you can rest assured you will be well taken care of.
