Palm Jumeirah is an artificial man-made island in the shape of a palm tree jutting out into the Arabian Gulf, offering stunning views and incredible luxury. For a holiday in Dubai that is both relaxing and exciting in equal measure, this is the place to be.

There is nowhere else in the world quite like Dubai, with its impressive architecture, world-class shopping and man-made islands constructed in all manner of shapes. The most famous of these artificial archipelagos is the Palm Jumeirah, which fans out into the Persian Gulf as if it were a palm tree on the shore.

Palm Jumeirah, a quick overview

One of the largest man-made islands in the world, Palm Jumeirah consists of a two-kilometre long trunk, with 17 fronds coming off it and a surrounding semicircular strip or crescent. Since it was launched in the early 2000s, the series of islands has developed into a world-renowned destination, attracting visitors to explore its many attractions.

You gain access to it by boat, via an underwater tunnel you can cross by car or via the Palm Monorail, linked to the Dubai Tram system at the Dubai Marina. Once there you can travel around the Palm using the monorail service which goes all the way from the foot of the island complex at Gateway Towers to the Atlantis, The Palm hotel at the very end. There are plans to link the Palm Monorail with the Dubai Metro but this is still in the works.

Holidaymakers can stay in the high-class hotels located on the Palm, drink in the views and enjoy its restaurants without having to set foot on the mainland. Visitors can also shop to their hearts' content; take a boat trip from the Dubai Marina close by; or lounge on the beach. With beautiful landscaping throughout in addition to the many recreational options it's like a mini city in its own right. A separate, lavish world in which to experience the renowned Dubai extravagance.

Where to stay

When it comes to choosing somewhere to stay in Dubai, few locations are more luxurious than Palm Jumeirah. The archipelago is home to a wide selection of five-star hotels that offer all the creature comforts a guest could ask for.

Hotels to pick from in Palm Jumeirah include:

  • The Fairmont Palm Hotel and Resort

Named after the island itself, this plush hotel benefits from a stunning location by the beach, overlooking the Arabian Gulf. With an onsite fitness centre and health club facilities, as well as a spa, guests' bodies can experience wonderful luxury too.

  • Atlantis, The Palm

The first hotel to be built on the island, Atlantis, The Palm occupies the prime position at the tree's apex. Its ocean-view setting is reflecting in the theme of the legend of Atlantis, which is carried throughout, with additional sparks of Arabian elements to set it off. It's also home to the largest, most spectacular water park in Dubai: Aquaventure and the Lost Chambers, also offering swimming with the dolphins experiences.

  • Waldorf Astoria, Palm Jumeirah

The white colonnaded expanse of the Waldorf Astoria, Palm Jumeirah butts up to its very own white sand private beach. Add to this the two temperature-controlled swimming pools and onsite tennis courts for an experience that doesn't allow visitors to get bored.

Where to eat

Elements to consider when choosing where to dine in Palm Jumeirah go much further than just the cuisine on offer. A culinary experience on this most exclusive of islands is as much about the location and the view as it is the food.

  • L'Olivo

Enjoy a plate of authentic cuisine while overlooking the sea at this charming restaurant located inside the Rixos The Palm hotel. Decorated in soothing olive tones and wood, L'Olivo does rustic chic like nowhere else.

  • Seagrill on 25°

If you are going to spend so much time looking at the ocean during your time at Palm Jumeirah, you might as well enjoy its bounty too. The freshest seafood, grilled in a Lebanese style can be found at this restaurant inside Fairmont The Palm.

  • Mashrabiya Lounge

Not all eating is about dinner and those looking for a highly decadent experience should go no further than afternoon tea at the Mashrabiya Lounge. Think fresh scones and Devonshire cream, Battenberg and Eccles cakes, as well as an impressively extensive tea menu to wash the cakes and pastries down with.

What to do and see

It is not surprising that many of the activities on offer on Palm Jumeirah are based around the sea or water. This gives visitors the opportunity to make the most of the location and explore some of the creatures that live way beyond the idyllic beaches.

  • The Lost Chambers Aquarium

Carrying on with the theme of Atlantis, this aquarium has a fascinating roll call of inhabitants. Among them are sharks, eels and seahorses, with a touch tank to get up close and personal with them. A daily schedule of interactive shows makes this slice of the underwater world all the more appealing.

  • Aquaventure Waterpark

Centred around the imposing Tower of Poseidon, even the biggest adrenaline junkies will get their fill from the rides, slides and zip lines on offer. Aquaconda is the highlight of any visit, as it is the widest water slide found anywhere in the world.

  • Dolphin Bay

Swimming with dolphins is the quintessential once-in-a-lifetime experience and can be fulfilled at Palm Jumeirah. Holidaymakers can see these magnificent creatures glide through the water, touch them and swim along them.

Man-made wonder you need to visit

Staying, eating, drinking and playing on a large man-made island in the shape of a palm tree situated in the Arabian Gulf is not an opportunity that comes around very often. This monument to decadence and luxury has to be experienced to be believed and once enjoyed is likely to entice you back again and again.
