Modern Dubai Creek represents the history of the emirate in miniature, as this waterway still showcases the dhows that have plied it for centuries, as well as the glittering skyscrapers that define Dubai to this day. The saltwater creek provided the foundation for Dubai's economy and is now a place to gaze at the awe-inspiring buildings, set sail or play a few rounds of golf.

Overview

Through the years, Dubai Creek has been the main port for dhows bringing goods from India and East Africa, an important fishing area and the centre of pearl diving in the emirate. It stretches from the Arabian Gulf to the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and an expansion project in recent years has seen the Dubai Creek being brought just south of Shaikh Zayed Road.

At present, there are five crossing points spanning Dubai Creek from the Deira side to Bur Dubai, with two more in construction. These bridges and a tunnel make both sides accessible, although travelling between the two via water taxi dhow is a more traditional and romantic way to get across.

Where to stay

Opting to stay on the Deira bank of Dubai Creek not only puts visitors close to the hustle and bustle of souks and stunning views over the water, but puts some of Dubai's most luxurious hotels at their disposal. A waterfront promenade is dotted with establishments that make up some of the emirate's most distinguished architecture, which are not just limited to accommodation. The likes of the Deira Twin Towers and Dubai Creek Tower can also be found here.

-Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers - one of the first five-star hotels to open in Dubai, this establishment occupies an enviable position overlooking the creek and within easy walking distance of a number of key attractions. A recent renovation means that classic style has been combined with contemporary design and each of the rooms and suites is fitted with all mod cons.

-Hilton Dubai Creek - with a rooftop pool and bar that offers stunning views over the creek, it can be difficult for some visitors to tear themselves away from this hotel. Its contemporary rooms were designed by world-renowned architect Carlos Ott and the panoramic windows in the most luxurious rooms put the location right at the heart of any stay.

-Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek - this five-star hotel is well established in the Dubai Creek area and offers a plethora of amenities to its guests. An outdoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and a 24-hour gym are accompanied by no fewer than ten restaurants and three bars, meaning there is a setting to suit every taste.

Where to eat

Dubai Creek's biggest draw is undoubtedly its waterfront views and deciding where to eat should be as much about the vistas as the cuisine. Many establishments in this area of Dubai have floating terraces or offer dinner cruises on the creek, resulting in unique experiences.

-Bateaux Dubai - offering scheduled sailings daily or private hire, Bateaux Dubai allows visitors to enjoy a luxurious four-course meal with panoramic views of Dubai from the creek. A glass-enclosed, air-conditioned dining room provides the perfect setting to enjoy red snapper or lamb shoulder, while the outside terrace calls for leisurely drinks and good conversation.

-Casa de Tapas - the Dubai Creek Yacht Club's Spanish-themed eatery is based on the traditional bodega venues found in Madrid. It serves up everything from paella and sangria to morsels of tapas to accompany the extensive drinks menu. An inverted lemon tree is the centrepiece of the restaurant and mosaic tiles and dark woods give it an authentic feel, but the views of the creek are never far away.

-Sumibiya - food from just about anywhere in the world can be found throughout Dubai and Japanese specialities are no exception. Located within the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sumibaya has a buffet and sushi options, but the star of the show is the little barbecue embedded into each table, where you can grill your own seafood and meat.

What to do and see

Attractions in the Dubai Creek area are varied and offer up something for every taste, with shopaholics catered to just a sufficiently as those wishing to get into nature.

-Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club - sailing on the creek is a wonderful way to live the Dubai lifestyle and take everything in. Couple this with a few rounds of golf at the club's 18-hole course and you have the recipe for a relaxing day of activities.

-The souks - traditional Arabic markets known as souks can be found on both banks of Dubai Creek and are where traded goods would be unloaded in times of old. The best ones to explore to this day remain the spice souk, which is an assault on all the senses; the gold souk, which glitters with treasures; and the abundant fish souk, where all types of seafood can be found.

-Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary - twitchers keen to get away from some of the most well-known elements of travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be pleased to hear that the wetlands at the end of Dubai Creek attract many migratory birds. Species including curlews and plovers, eagles and ospreys can all be seen within the sanctuary.

Conclusions

Including Dubai Creek on your holiday itinerary is an opportunity to return to the origins of the emirate and explore what it has evolved into today. Combine traditional activities, such as travelling by dhow and bartering in a souk, with staying in stunning modern hotels.
