Dubai breaks record in 2017 with 15.8 million tourist arrivals

Dubai seems likely to reach its target of welcoming 20 million tourists by 2020, as the nation received a record-breaking total of 15.78 million visitors last year. This sum, 6.2 percent higher than that of 2016, clearly reflects how the Emirate has been successful in widening its offers for all tastes and age ranges by opening new landmarks and continuing to develop entertainment centres.

Dubai breaks record in 2017 with 15.8 million tourist arrivals

Renowned for its luxurious skyscrapers, amazing technological advances and amazing hospitality, Dubai is one of the world’s most coveted destinations. With exciting new additions like the stunning Dubai Frame or the Ice Park in Dubai Garden Glow, the Emirate has been growing in its varied entertainment offers at a truly fast pace. As a testament to this growth, government sources have recently revealed that the Emirate welcomed a total of 15.79 million visitors in the past year, which breaks the 2016 record of 14.9 million with 6.2 per cent increase.

According to the latest data published by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism), specific markets have been helpful in achieving this goal. South Asia has emerged as the number one source of tourists for Dubai, with hordes of Indian visitors flooding to the Emirate. In total, the number of Indian visitors last year amounted to 2.1 million, up by 15 per cent in comparison to 2016. A considerable part of this achievement could be amounted to the ongoing collaboration between Dubai tourism and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the multi-awarded #BeMyGuest campaign.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia followed as the second largest contributor of tourists to Dubai at 1.53 million. In spite of the fact that the overall number of Saudi tourists presented a 7 per cent decline from a year earlier, the kingdom remained the highest driver of visitor traffic from within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. In third place came UK visitors which continue to grow steadily as a market for Dubai tourism, with 1.27 million travellers – up by 2 per cent over 2016.

When speaking of how the Emirate has been successful in making the number of travellers continue to increase year after year, His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, director general of Dubai Tourism, stated how the government had been making important investments and great efforts to continue catering to the taste of discerning visitors. From utmost luxury and the most amazing urban landscape of skyscrapers in the world to relaxed beach settings, parks and other family-oriented options, the tourism industry keeps working on “broadening Dubai’s appeal to a wide spectrum of visitors.”

His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri stated that the 6.2 per cent growth in tourist numbers has allowed Dubai to ramp up towards meeting the 2020 tourism targets which include attracting 20 million visitors per year starting 2020. He went on to declare that:

“Today, Dubai’s travel and tourism sector is not only well positioned to offer a superlative destination experience across its eight core strategic propositions, but also geared to accelerate its appeal to the diverse and evolving needs of our global travellers.”

One of the most recent developments that clearly reflect how the city keeps expanding its tourism offer is the new beachfront district. La Mer opened in 2017 to provide families with a new hotspot for dining, playing and unwinding. Other places of interest that were inaugurated comprise the Eithad Museum and La Perle in Habtoor City, which is seen to boost Dubai’s entertainment scene. Finally, perhaps the most spectacular of all additions is Dubai Frame, an amazing attraction that opened late last year and has already drawn the attention of thousands of visitors from all over the world.
