The big moment many were waiting for arrived on 1st January 2018, as the amazing Dubai Sky Frame welcomed its first visitors. The one-of-a-kind monument takes visitors on a journey to discover Dubai’s past, present and future.

Dubai Sky Frame opens to the public on New Year's Day

Dubai kicked off 2018 with a bang, and not just due to the amazing firework spectacle over the Burj Khalifa. On New Year’s Day, one of the most expected and unique monuments to have ever graced the city finally began welcoming the public: the Dubai Sky Frame.

Comprising two 150-metre-high towers connected via a sky bridge, this stunning landmark will show its visitors a complete view of Dubai’s past and present glory and the hopes for an even more prosperous future.

During the 1st January inauguration, 1,800 people were lucky enough to become the first ones to experience the Dubai Sky Frame and walk the high glass floor of the sky bridge. During a media preview that gave a sneak peek of the Dh250-million project in Zabeel Park ahead of its public opening, Director General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Nasser Lootah stated:

“We will allow only 200 visitors per hour. People have to buy the ticket from Gate 4 [of Zabeel Park]. Within two weeks, they will be able to purchase the tickets online also.”

Known as “Berwaz Dubai” in Arabic, the Dubai Frame was designed to represent Dubai’s past, present and future. The mezzanine floor features the Past Zone. This area tells the story of the city’s rapid developments in the 20th century and presents all the aspects that represent Dubai. Welcoming the visitors with a tribute to Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Father of Dubai, the gallery also pays rich tributes to Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Father of the Nation. Hologram projections, mist effects and smells also take visitors on a journey back to Dubai’s past.

Boasting 75 metres of glass panels covering the façade and floor, the Sky Bridge stands for present Dubai. Visitors can observe the city’s imposing skyscrapers and beautiful landmarks from the bridge, whilst smart telescope-cum-cameras take pictures of them with the spectacular background and event post the shots to the Social Medial Wall on the ground floor from where visitors will be able to purchase them on their way to exit. To add to the spectacular experience, large prisms on the wall throw up some fun for the visitors as what they write on glass frames takes the form of digital graffiti.

As for the future, Sky Dubai Frame features an amazing gallery depicting the Emirate 50 years from now. This area recreates a virtual metropolis through interactive projections and virtual reality technology. Smart transport solutions including flying taxis and the Hyperloop, 3D-printed buildings, drones flying around, robots performing routine jobs, advances in health care and even preservation of environment are featured to showcase the smart and sustainable future of Dubai.

Dubai Municipality made great efforts to make sure the ambitious project was the amazing landmark that stands today. Building the Dubai Sky Frame involved over 3,600 experts comprising engineers, architects and technicians, and labourers who used more than 2,900 square metres of laminated glass and over 2,000 tonnes of steel.
