Dubai Water Canal officially opens after three years of construction

Dubai has opened its brand new water canal, following a three-year construction project which was an extension of Dubai Creek. The Dubai Water Canal will bring a unique tourist and commercial hub to the city.

Stretching 6.4 kilometres from Business Bay commercial district down to the Arabian Gulf, the waterway varies between 80 and 120 metres in width, and the development cost $735 million.

The artificial canal was unveiled in October 2013, and its official launch took place last month in a ceremony attended by Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum. The waterway connects the historic areas of Deira and Bur Dubai, and opens up new marine transport options for the city.

There are nine marine stations that offer water taxi and ferry services, and plans are in place to add a three-kilometre-long jogging track, a six-kilometre walkway, and a 12-kilometre-long cycle path.

During the opening ceremony, Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said:

“The Dubai Water Canal is one of the smartest ideas of Shaikh Mohammad that adds a unique tourist and commercial showpiece, offering a new style in Dubai. Shaikh Mohammad is always keen to roll out visionary ideas that define new concepts for people’s happiness and welfare.”

As well as offering more transport connections, the canal will also provide a new tourism and recreational hub in the city. The development has leisure facilities, restaurants, four hotels, residential district, cafes, entertainment venues and a shopping centre.

There are smart lighting systems that run along the canal, on the new pedestrian bridges, and the Shaikh Zayed bridge fountain, and the lights are controlled via smart apps. Benches have been placed along the waterway so people can sit and watch the activity of the boats, and there are more than 1,600 parking spaces along the length of the canal.

Dubai is one of the leading tourist destinations in the Middle East, and last year more than 14 million travellers visited the emirate. Tourism officials expect to receive 25 million visitors a year by 2020, when the vibrant city will host the global trade fair Expo 2020. There are also plans to build the world’s tallest skyscraper that will be higher than the city’s 823-metre Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest tower in the world.
