Dubai unveils superfast train of the future to Abu Dhabi

Posted: 09-Nov-16 12:42

Getting to the U.A.E. capital of Abu Dhabi from Dubai will be a as quick as catching a 12-minute train ride if Dubai´s plans for building an ultra-fast train come to full fruition. Details for the development of a futuristic Hyperloop train linking the two cities have recently been disclosed, with Dubai partnering up with L.A.-based Hyperloop One in order to test-run the possibilities and put the plans in full motion.

Dubai unveils superfast train of the future to Abu Dhabi

For those that thought Dubai couldn´t get more futuristic, have we got news for you. The most forward-looking of emirates has just unveiled plans for the building of a new ultra-fast train service connecting the city with Abu Dhabi, its southern neighbour and capital of the U.A.E.

With both emirates separated by a distance of around 160 km, translating in a costly two-hour-long car ride or a 30-minute flight, the new Hyperloop train would theoretically be able to link both destinations in a matter of just 12 minutes.

Dramatically enhancing the commuting options for both Abu Dhabi and Dubai residents as well as holidaymakers looking to hop between the two cities to get a broader U.A.E experience, the new train service would work out cheaper than a taxi, which costs around 250 dirhams (around £55) for the journey, and a plane ticket, which is typically priced at 150 AED (approximately £33) one way.

Announcement of the deal concerning the building of such a mega-fast train was made at no other place than Burj Khalifa’s very top. In true Dubai flashy and pompous fashion, details of the new investment were given atop the world’s highest building, which also happens to offer a panoramic view of Dubai’s skyline and stands as a symbol of Dubai’s eagerness to push on toward the future.

Teaming up with Los Angeles-based train-building company Hyperloop One, Dubai will be studying the potential for building its Hyperloop train over the next few months, putting the new technology to test which remains in its trial phase.

Speaking about the deal, Hyperloop CEO, Rob Lloyd said:

"We do aspire to build the world's first hyperloop here in the United Arab Emirates. That is our aspiration. We have a lot of work to do."

According to some of the details revealed there would be several stations throughout Dubai linking the new hyperloop train to Abu Dhabi, with individual levitating pods carrying passengers and cargo between the cities. During the official project presentation last Tuesday, Hyperloop officials exhibited circular station models for Dubai, including one at Emirates Towers in Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s main artery.

And the new train wouldn’t just be linking Dubai to Abu Dhabi, as the project is expected to be expanded to also include other Middle Eastern cities like Doha in Qatar, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and Muscat in Oman. In fact, official sources claim the journey between Dubai and Doha would be a mere 23 minutes with just 27 minutes separating Dubai from Muscat and 48 minutes to get from Dubai to Riyadh. No doubt Dubai’s latest transport system would revolutionise not just the Middle East, but it would be a first in the world.

Basing his confidence in the project on other successful Dubai transport feats, such as the city’s pioneering driverless metro (the world’s longest) and the emirate’s award-winning flagship carrier, Emirates, Lloyd continued elaborating on his optimism about this latest venture:

“[Dubai] has become a transportation hub and leader in the world. In the Emirates, we believe everything is possible.”

For the time being, the new Hyperloop One continues undergoing serial testing in the Nevada desert. Time will tell if and how soon it will be ready to take on passengers.
