Oktoberfest arrives to Dubai Media City with added spook factor

Posted: 25-Oct-16 11:20

Probably the most unexpected city in the world to host the beer-geared festivity of Oktoberfest, Dubai has stepped up to the plate to celebrate all things German during an epic ten-day party including a traditional "festzelt" (pole marquee) at the centre of all the action. The chosen location is the amphitheatre at Dubai Media City and the German-inspired celebrations will be in full swing from 20th to 29th October, including a Halloween-style "Deadtoberfest" party over the last three days.

Oktoberfest arrives to Dubai Media City with added spook factor

In a part of the world where alcohol, while available, is usually frowned upon and only served at licensed establishments and hotels geared towards foreign tourists, you wouldn’t expect a massive Oktoberfest celebration. Yet, Dubai is one place known for breaking the mould and defying expectations, as this is exactly what this popular emirate just did starting 20th October and lasting a whole ten days.

For the first time ever in history, Dubai is celebrating the famous Bavarian festivity of Oktoberfest in full public flair. While in previous years Dubai honoured the popular German festival with more discreet celebrations usually held inside hotels (namely the Grand Hyatt Dubai, famous for hosting the biggest Oktoberfest parties with girls in full traditional Bavarian costume) and special performances by German bands held at The Dome in Dubai Sports City during a two-to-three day celebration.

But this month Dubai is truly going all out to treat all beer-loving tourists to a full-size celebration of epic proportions, dedicating a full public space to Oktoberfest celebrations at Dubai Media City’s Amphitheatre. To mark the occasion a giant “festzelt” or pole marquee has been set up right at the centre of all the action, which is surrounded by traditional German entertainment and merriment of all kinds, not least of all beer, which is what this festival is ultimately dedicated to: the German love for this alcoholic malt drink.

Although, quite understandably for a non-drinking Muslim country, Dubai doesn’t draw much attention to the beer-drinking part of the festivity, visitors will be able to sip on the highly-revered German produce while enjoying the lively entertainment, which includes a ladies’ night, a series of special deals like delicious Bavarian brunches on Fridays from 295 dirhams (around £65)and a full-blown spooky Halloween-style mega party dubbed “Deadtoberfest” and held during the event’s last three nights. On most nights the party goes on until 2 a.m. (excepton Saturdays when things are wrapped up at 1 a.m.) to the sounds of Munich-based band Gaudiblosn, famous for their original mash-up of German pop and party hits.

Also marking the first event of the season, Oktoberfest DXB, kicked off last Thursday and will go on until next Sunday 29th October. To get yourself some German party action, the entry price is a mere 25 Dhs (around £5) from Saturday to Wednesday and 60 Dhs (£13) on Thursday and Friday. Doubtlessly it will be a great way to add a new dimension to your Dubai holiday if you happen to be enjoying one over the coming days. Beer is just the beginning… this is the last chance to grab some Oktoberfest action in Dubai before the month ends…seize the opportunity!
