Dubai Tourism committed to lower its carbon footprint

Dubai has signed an MoU with four local companies who will share their knowledge and expertise with Dubai's tourism sector on ways to reduce their carbon footprint. The MoU comes as part of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Initiative (DSTI) and is a major step towards Dubai achieving the goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable holiday destination.

Dubai Tourism committed to lower its carbon footprint

Dubai is working hard to position itself as the world’s most sustainable holiday destination with the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Initiative (DSTI). Officials at the Emirate recently announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four locally based companies aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of Dubai’s tourism sector. Under the terms of the MoU each of the four companies will share their knowledge and expertise on reducing emissions with Dubai’s tourism and hospitality sector through various workshops and training sessions on sustainable business practices such as electricity and water conversation.

The four companies involved in the initiative are namely Etihad ESCO, Dubai Carbon, Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) and Emirates Wildlife Society-WWF. Laila Abdul Latif, deputy director-general, EWS-WWF hailed the DSTI as a good example of the ways in which the public and private sector can collaborate together to advance Dubai’s sustainability agenda. Local officials are also said to be confident that the success of the initiative will encourage other environmental groups and stakeholders to get involved.

Speaking to Gulf News, Ahmad Khalifa Al Falasi, CEO, Corporate Services and Investments, Dubai Tourism highlighted the significance of the initiative and the contribution that it will make towards the emirate’s long term success,

“Dubai Tourism is proud to have pioneered this local initiative to encourage our stakeholders in the hospitality sector to contribute towards environmental sustainability and, ultimately, a flourishing green economy that will help ensure a healthy emirate for future generations”

If successful, the DSTI will be a pivotal moment for Dubai’s tourism sector particularly in light of Dubai’s popularity among holidaymakers as it would prove that mega destinations with a large influx of travellers could still achieve a high level of sustainability. The annual Mastercard Global Destinations Cities Index recently ranked Dubai among the top five destinations for overnight arrivals in 2016 predicting that the emirate would attract 15.27 million visitors in 2016. This figure is encouraging given Dubai’s long term goal of attracting 20 million visitors by the year 2020. Currently India and Saudi Arabia are the top two source markets for Dubai’s tourism industry accounting for 1.6 and 1.54 million visitors in 2015 respectively.
