Dubai tropical rainforest opens to public

Already famous for its towering skyscrapers and glamorous attractions the City of Dubai now has a new destination for holiday visitors, one usually more at home in the tropics than in a dry desert climate. After three years of preparations the Green Planet project is open to guests, a tropical rainforest filled with thousands of varieties of birds, animals and plant-life.

Dubai tropical rainforest opens to public

A trip to Dubai is filled with the possibility of amazing sites and attractions, from the tallest building on the planet to massive shopping malls and luxurious hotels. Now there’s a new grand destination for travellers and locals alike, one that is capable of transporting visitors from the desert to the tropics without every stepping foot outside city limits.

The Green Planet project just opened to the public, a tropical rainforest with a massive tree trunk rising above a vast aquarium. Not only can visitors come to catch sight of tropical animals such as snakes, sloths, porcupines and exotic birds, but also spot stingrays and arapaima in an area made to simulate an underwater tropical habitat. Travel Daily Media recently published an article detailing some specifics of the project, from the flooded forest to treetop views of the unique ecosystem.

As writer Gemma Greenwood explains it took three years to open up the project in Dubai’s City Walk, a new outdoor shopping and dining complex. Focused around a large artificial tree trunk, the attraction includes multiple planters filled with tropically themed fauna and flora. As they grow and flourish these real plants are expected to form a real living environment, someday turning into the largest fabricated, yet life-sustaining tree in the world.

With a maintained temperature of between 25-28 degrees Celsius, humidity within the attraction is set at a balmy 70-percent, giving visitors the impression they have been virtually transported to another part of the world. Aimed at teaching visitors more about the environment, along with individual tickets the site additionally provides a series of education programmes for different age groups.

According to what Eric Hupperts, an American Green Planet curator and exhibits manager, told The National,

“This is a living classroom, an experience where anyone can learn about tropical wildlife. A visual connection with what children, in particular, are learning about is so much more powerful than in a sterile classroom.”

The exhibit’s flooded rainforest is made to represent the tropical ecosystem’s base level, replicating what would be living underwater. The dark forest floor follows this on level two with filtered sunlight and large leaves on level three. Meanwhile, visitors can also use a lift up to the top of the bio dome, providing a sweeping view from atop the entire ecosystem, complete with rainforest sounds, steam and even waterfalls.

Described on the official website as an immersive and vertical rainforest, Green Planet is open limited hours each day of the week. Located in City Walk, Green Planet joins a number of exciting shops and retailers in one of Dubai’s premiere new destinations. Packed with places to see and visit, City Walk is just one of the rapidly growing attractions in a vibrant city already known for attracting visitors with world-class sites, high-end accommodations and exciting experiences.
