Dubai International Airport "world's busiest" for international traffic

Dubai International Airport (DXB) just earned the title of world's busiest airport for international travel, beating out some of the world's other biggest airports in terms of not only passengers but cargo, too. The newly released report falls in line with other rankings showing air passengers up considerably in the Middle East as more and more travellers make plans to head to the region.

Dubai International Airport "world's busiest" for international traffic

One of the most popular airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is now officially deemed the world’s busiest airport when it comes to international traffic and number two when it comes to cargo. That’s according to a new report by the Airports Council International (ACI), as outlined in an article by author Gemma Greenwood of Travel Daily Media.

In referencing several statistics from a new ACI World Airport Traffic report, Greenwood writes that DXB served more than 77 million passengers in 2015, up nearly 11-per-cent from the previous year. That helped put the Dubai airport in first place among international passenger usage, ahead of both Hong Kong and London Heathrow in that respect. DXB came in second place behind Hong Kong during the same time period for international air cargo, handling more than 2.5 million metric tonnes of freight, up more than three-per-cent from the previous year.

Countries with developing economies in emerging markets seemed to see faster growth in airport traffic, registering more than eight-per-cent growth compared to a little more than five-per-cent in places with more advanced economies. That totalled a global passenger traffic share of 44-per-cent for emerging markets in the world.

More specifically, when looking at the Middle East the report found a nearly 10-per-cent increase in air passengers from 2014 to 2015, totalling 334 million people this past year. The busiest region was Asia-Pacific, up more than eight-per-cent to top two billion.

Part of that is being equated to the mere 16 airports and 40 million passengers recorded in 2005, compared to the 37 airports ten years later. Greenwood quotes the report as stating,

“On the back of a growing middle class in key emerging markets, the significant growth of intercontinental hubs in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East reveals that air transport’s nucleus continues to move eastward.”

Meanwhile, when taking a more broad look at the world, overall airport passenger numbers topped seven billion for 2015, up more than six-per-cent over 2014, with increases in each of the world’s six regions. Atlanta-Hartsfield-Jackson airport retained the title of overall busiest airport in the world with a record-breaking number of passengers last year. More than 100 million people flew through the airport, up more than five-per-cent. Atlanta is noted as a port of entry for North America and a major hub for connecting flights.

While London boasts the world’s largest airport system with six airports and more than 155 million passengers last year, New York’s three airports handled another 123 million passengers. Tokyo came in at number three with 113 million passengers.

With millions of passengers itself, DXB continues to attract foreign visitors to the UAE. As the primary airport for Dubai, it serves as the point of entry for countless holiday and business travellers, who come each year to explore and experience this exciting Middle East destination packed with luxurious hotels and world-class attractions.
