Many changes are coming to the ultra-modern emirate of Dubai as Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum approved a new urban plan that will upgrade the city roads. Nine significant transformations will be made in accordance with the Traffic and Transportation Plan for 2030, which envisions new and improved roads, bridges and canal stations.

Sheikh Mohammed approved nine changes to Dubai’s roads

The ever-evolving Dubai is renowned for being one of the world’s most modern and luxurious destinations. As tourism soars and the economy rises, the Emirate decides to invest money on improving infrastructure. In this spirit, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai just gave the green light to a series of landmark projects.

As part of the RTA’s (Roads and Transport Authority) Traffic and Transportation Plan 2030, Dubai will make nine major transformations including a significant amount of new and improved roads, bridges and canal stations.

Nine main changes the Emirate will see soon

  1. Walkable streets

Walkability” is a key directive for the RTA’s 2030 plans. In order to make streets easier to transit for pedestrians, the internal streets of sixteen Dubai residential suburbs will be paved. Green spaces will also be added to Dubai’s residential areas; a project that will begin project will begin in the first quarter of next year, and be finished by 2021.

  2. Creek crossing

A new bridge will be built between Deira and Bur Dubai at the Shindagha Crossing point, and will replace the existing Shindagha Tunnel. The design of the bridge is said to be inspired by infinity.

  3. More roads in Deira

Deira’s roads and general conditions will be improved in a project containing three phases. The first phase has already finished and will be followed by a project that connects the crossing to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Roa, whilst the third phase will overhaul the intersection of Abu Hail Road with Cairo Road and Al Rasheed Road and also includes Al Mamzar Bridge and Abu Hail Bridge. Another important addition will be a new bridge to Deira Islands.

  4. JBR Bridge

By early 2017, Al Sufouh Road will be connected with the Western Street in the JBR area through a 120-metre-long pedestrian bridge.

  5. Shorter drive from the airport

The Dubai Airport road will also be enhanced with bridges and tunnels. This project will increase the capacity of the road by about 5,000 vehicles per hour, as well as reduce the time it takes to travel from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street from 30 minutes to five minutes.

  6. Bicycle bridges around Qudra

On the intersection between Jebel Ali Lehbab (E77) and Qudra Streets near Al Qudra cycle track where they will also build a flyover bridge for bicycles, a new pedestrian bridge will be built on Baniyas Road, as part of a project named Jewel of the Creek.

  7. Water stations

By 2030 there will be 30 marine stations in Dubai. The design for these stations at Business Bay was disclosed by Sheikh Mohammed. He expressed that the design:

“...matches local architecture in the region and has tinted shades to serve tourists, visitors and users of public transportation.”

  8. Special metro buses

The design and look of the new metro buses will also be entirely unique, in the interest of making them easy to distinguish from other public means of transportation.

  9. Larger metro stations

One of the RTA’s main concerns is overall bettering public transport for the people of Dubai and its visitors. Public transport capacity will be boosted, with projects like the Burj Khalifa Dubai Metro station which will be expanded so that it can easily accommodate up to 180,000 passengers a day.

New changes for better city

All these transformations show Dubai’s progress and steps towards raising the quality of life conditions for its inhabitants as well as making the Emirate even more appealing to tourists. The new plans will ensure Dubai not only keeps its title as a lavish and up-to-date destination, but makes it rise even further within the tourism industry.
