Viewing Dubai from the back of a luxury Mercedes-Maybach Pullman

Even in a city known for its flashy vehicles one particular new car stands out. The Mercedes Pullman typically transports royals around Dubai but this time a journalist is giving his take on the newest version of the ultra-luxury vehicle. From the plush carpeting and comfortable leather seats to the flat screen TVs, uncover the sheer extravagance of riding around the UAE in style.

Viewing Dubai from the back of a luxury Mercedes-Maybach Pullman

It’s not often that an average person gets to experience Dubai from the back of a luxurious vehicle more accustomed to the likes of famous singers, the Pope or even an emir, but that’s exactly the spot a writer from Automobile magazine recently found himself. Author Ben Oliver outlined his experience of viewing the city from the back of the extravagant Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Pullman, accompanied by photographs by Dirk Weyhenmeyer.

The sleek Pullman limousine has been a staple of world leaders for decades, now joined by the latest model of the S-class family. While Oliver points out the car was revealed for the first time at the Geneva auto show in 2015, only a few of these vehicles have thus far been produced. He felt fortunate enough to land an assignment being driven around Dubai in one of the luxury vehicles.

Base priced at $576,000 the car is not the most expensive vehicle on Dubai roads yet the author maintains it garners more than its fair share of second looks. Markus Rubenbauer, who heads up Pullman and Mercedes’ armoured cars, explains it has to do with the company’s target customer:

“In the Gulf, around 70-percent of Pullman customers are royals.”

With this in mind, Oliver says he closed the vehicle curtains, saving himself and his engineer companion some expected confusion from locals.

The vehicle is described as including a 256-inch long body, or a full 21.3 feet, slightly longer that a standard shipping container or a female great white shark. It also includes a gently sloped roof and a heavy door, though the author acknowledges most riders do not usually open a door themself.

The interior is made up of metal, wood or leather, plus lambs wool carpeting, privacy curtains on every window, a glass divider that can be put up for privacy between the occupants and the driver and an intercom system. In addition, the cabin includes foldout tables, a refrigerator, small screens on the rear-facing seats and an 18.5-inch flat screen television. The interior roof of the vehicle features time, temperature and speed displays, plus two speakers.

The author reveals the United Nations Security Council set had some say in the new design. For example, when the German Chancellor’s office reached out with the request of a longer rear door on the new model it was taken into consideration. The office stated the need based on protocol calling for heads of state to enter a vehicle first without having interpreters turn their back to a leader. Based on this, Mercedes followed through with a 53-inch long door on the new Pullman.

In reviewing the vehicle, Oliver claims he felt isolated with the partition screen and window curtains in place, much like being transported in a private jet. While not as silent as some other vehicles, he found the car void of any vibration and says the vehicle easily drove over speed bumps. He mentioned the rear-facing seats were a bit firm, but acknowledges that the company refers to these seats as “interpreter” seats, or rather seats that anyone but the “customer” sits in. He did find that legroom was not a problem.

Before exiting the Pullman, Oliver was also joined by a man he describes as the top Mercedes salesman in Dubai. The salesman told him that he is expecting a few of the vehicles to come to Dubai, most likely for the ruling family. Most of his customers, he says, prefer the G-wagen, though he does have some S-class and C-class customers. He also explains that a majority of his Dubai customers don’t want to wait, preferring immediate pickup instead of placing orders, and are looking for a vehicle that comes packed with options.

In comparison, Oliver found it surprising that the Pullman comes with few available options, though the company explains this was a deliberate decision due to the busy lifestyles of its customers. Still, there are a few upgrades available, including an extra $10,000 for customized speakers, high-end 3-D audio for an extra $15,000 and an extra $25,000 for a panoramic sunroof. Adding armouring to a Pullman could cost another $500,000.

It’s expected the Pullman will be used by its owners for long coastal trips plus short trips between the office, home or airport while they visit Dubai. In other words, when the owner isn’t already planning to fly via private jet or helicopter. The company isn’t saying how many Pullmans it will produce each year, nor who is getting one, only confirming that customers will include some heads of state.
