Discover the facts and figures behind Dubai's thriving and expanding tourism industry

Over recent decades, Dubai has become the gateway into the Middle East, in regards to business and leisure. The United Arab Emirate is thriving and ever-expanding, and Time Out Dubai has listed a few facts about its forthcoming projects and its position as a luxury destination.

Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, and every year millions of international business travellers and tourists visit the emirate. With its unique architecture, huge tourist attractions, and upscale accommodation, it is attracting more and more visitors every year.

With a ratio of 5.7 visitors to one resident in Dubai in 2015, the emirate has the highest visitor-resident ratio in the world, and it looks likely to increase even more in the future. In 2011, 9.3 million international travellers visited Dubai, and over the years these numbers have steadily increased, with 14.3 million recorded in 2015. In 2014, overnight visitors in 2014 spent a total of $10 billion, with each visitor spending an average $815.

A report carried out by JLL consultants (Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated) revealed that 621 guest rooms opened in the first quarter of 2016, and with 10,000 rooms planned to open in total this year, that means there’s another 9,400 rooms that still have to be built by the end of the year.

The increase in hotel rooms is keeping up with the government’s plan to attract 20 million visitors by 2020. A report by research group STR states that as of 31st March, 2016, there were a total of 82,760 rooms available across Dubai.

However, the increase of rooms has resulted in a one per cent drop in occupancy levels from 2015 and 2016, which has led to a decrease in average room prices. This is particularly good news for tourists and domestic travellers as room rates have dropped from $859 dirhams ($230) to $811 dirhams ($220) per night.

Dubai’s main tourist source markets come from Saudi Arabia, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with U.S visitors spending the most money. The average length of stay or travellers increased from 3.78 days to 3.84 days in 2014.

The vibrant emirate is keen to offer an array of “world firsts”, from the world’s tallest building with the Burj Khalifa, to the world’s largest theme park, with the Dubailand, which is under development. The main airport, Dubai International, is the world’s busiest airport, with more than 78 million visitors recorded in 2015.
