After all the excitement of Christmas, there is just one final hurrah of the season to enjoy and that’s New Year. Sometimes this celebration can pale compared to its bigger and brasher counterpart, but those seeing in 2017 in Dubai will not be disappointed. There is so much going on in the Emirate, you’ll be pleased you booked a holiday in this part of the world for New Year.

Fireworks are an important part of any destination’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and Dubai is no different, apart from one thing: they’re bigger and better than anywhere else. This is of course a metaphor for the city, which is home to many superlatives, including the tallest building in the world. The Burj Khalifa is in fact the backdrop to some of the impressive bursts of colour, so you may wish to position yourself close by to see the pyrotechnic spectacular.

Alternatively, you can attend one of the other displays, such as that at the iconic Burj Al Arab, Atlantis The Palm or Al Qasba. With so many fireworks going off around the city, it will be difficult to miss them entirely, but it is worth scoping out a spot in advance to get a good view. Those lucky enough to have tickets to see Coldplay at du arena can expect to see fireworks as part of the show, while the free winterland carnival on Yas Island will also feature a ten-minute display.

Leaving land behind and enjoying a trip on a traditional wooden boat known as a dhow is a fantastic way to finish 2016. Things kick off at 8pm, going well beyond midnight, offering all the ingredients for a fantastic evening.

Among the hottest tickets in town for New Year’s Eve is the gala at Atlantis, The Palm, which promises glitz, glamour, feasting and entertainment galore. Arrive to Champagne and canapes in the Asateer tent, before heading into the formal venue, for an evening of entertainment, including a 30-piece band. The bulging luxury buffet will include live cooking stations and feature dishes to suit all tastes, from caviar to shawarmas. The dress code is elegant, with men expected to wear shirts and women gowns.
