Dubai is the desert destination where you can do anything and everything, so it'll come as no surprise to hear Dubai is a top spot for adventure. From dune bashing and hot air balloon rides to ziplining and sandboarding, there's a thrill for everyone here.
Dubai's most adrenaline-pumping activities
Few thrills can compare to skydiving. This sport is always absolutely unforgettable, but when the setting is spectacular, it becomes memorable on a whole new level. Skydive Dubai has one of the world's most incredible drop zones, directly over Palm Jumeirah.
Your flight will take you to an altitude of almost 4,000 metres before you and your experienced instructor leap from the plane for a full minute of heart-racing freefall before the parachute opens and you enjoy a leisurely glide back to earth. Along the way, gaze at unparallelled views of the emirate's most famous sites. Plus, you can have the whole experience on captured on camera so you can relive it again and again.
If you prefer, you can head over to the desert to jump over the sand dunes instead - a different and no less thrilling experience.
Hot air ballooning
Boasting similar brilliant views but at a much more sedate pace, hot air ballooning is another amazing option Dubai offers to the adventurous traveller. Balloon Adventures Emirates provides a selection of memorable flight experiences, including an overnight safari with a morning balloon ride, and a sunrise ride - perfect for admiring the glorious landscape in the beautiful early light of day.
A sunrise experience will include an early-morning pickup from your hotel, which will take you to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reservation. Enjoy a leisurely one-hour flight soaring over sand dunes and cliffs, spotting captivating wild animals, such as leaping gazelles, along the way. Plus, your pilot will tell you all about the local wildlife and landscape as you fly.
You don't need to have a head for heights to have a few thrills in Dubai. Motorsports lovers of all ages will be spoilt for choice here, with everything from go karting to fast-paced racing experiences on offer.
Among the highlights for lovers of motorsport is the Dubai Autodrome, where you can pick from a range of amazing driving experiences in Lotus, McLaren and even single seater models. So, get behind the wheel of your dream vehicle and hit the accelerator! If you're travelling with your family or friends and like the sound of a group race experience, the Autodrome also offers karting in its Kartdrome, which has both an indoor and outdoor track.
If you're interested in karting, Emirates Kart Centre is another great place to go. The oldest track in the UAE, it's also a firm favourite, thanks to the quality of the course. It's full of hairpin bends that thrill seekers will love!
For a different kind of motorsports adventure, take a trip with GASGAS Adventure Tours, which will give you the chance to head off-road on a thrilling motorcycle ride. You can pick from a range of simple routes, technical tracks for skilled riders, and trails designed for sightseeing.
Sandboarding isn't something you can do everywhere, which is part of what makes it such a perfect activity for your holiday in Dubai. Giving you the best possible way to make the most of the scenic sand dunes while you're around them, sandboarding is very similar to skateboarding - you simply slide down the dunes on a board. You need no prior experience and, thanks to the soft sand, you don't need to worry about hurting yourself if you fall off.
Another great way to experience the desert landscape is with a spot of dune bashing. Several companies offer dune bashing experiences, which allow you to hop in a twin-seater dune buggy and ride along a thrilling trail of sweeping sand dunes - the emirate's quintessential adventure.
Like the sound of hitting the water? Wakeboarding is the ideal way to get your adrenaline pumping, especially in Jebel Ali, which has absolutely perfect conditions for the sport.
So, why not try it during your stay? A cable will attach you to a power boat and take you on a breathtaking ride, slicing through the water at up to 40 miles an hour. There are experiences for beginners, meaning you need no prior experience to have a go, while there's also options for experts looking to hone their skills.
Mounting biking might not be the first adventure sport that springs to mind when you think of Dubai, but it's actually a great place for it. Recently, a series of trails have been created in the Hatta mountains - one of the most scenic spots in the emirate. There are now three trails here, each catering to different abilities. The easiest (green) trail is five km long, while the intermediate blue route is 3.6 km long and offers a bit more of a challenge. For experienced riders, the red route offers trickier turns and climbs, and promises to keep you on your toes. In the future, the mountain bike offering here is likely to expand, so keep your eye out for new developments.
There's plenty of scope for having an urban adventure too, and you won't find one better than XLine. This 558-metre long zipline runs over the top of Downtown Dubai, so you can image the kind of views you get as you zoom past buildings and above busy streets. In fact, you will actually go over the famous Dubai Fountains - one of the emirate's top attractions. Don't miss the chance to try this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
