Set in amongst the skyscrapers, hotels, restaurants and shopping malls of modern Dubai, the city’s zoo provides a haven of nature in the heart of the metropolis.
Built in 1967 by city resident H. H. Sheikh Rashid bin Maktoum, Dubai Zoo is the oldest zoo in the UAE and the oldest on the Arabian Peninsular.
Small and easy to navigate, the zoo was originally intended to house just a few selected animals like big cats and monkeys. Today, its collection includes approximately 230 species ranging from lions, jaguars and tigers to gorillas, wolves, giraffes and bears. Dubai Zoo recently became the first Arabian zoo to breed the chimpanzee and the Gordon’s wildcat.
A Dubai landmark since it first opened its doors in the 1960s, the zoo has entertained and educated generations of local residents and holidaymakers alike.
As well as its collection of rare and endangered animals, the zoo takes in strays and confiscated animals from across Dubai. Covering an area of just 1.75 hectares, the zoo is small enough to be explored in just a few hours, leaving visitors plenty of time to take in some of the other sights and attractions in the local area.
Just a stone’s throw from the zoo you’ll find the pristine Dubai waterfront, complete with public beaches, restaurants and shops, as well as several malls, large hotels and beach side resorts.
With so many landmarks and attractions nearby, it’s easy to fit a visit to the zoo into a busy day of sightseeing in the city. And as there are plans to relocate the zoo to a larger premises on the outskirts of Dubai, now’s the perfect time to take in this Dubai family favourite before it changes forever.
Enjoyable and educational for all the family, a visit to Dubai Zoo is perfect for visitors looking for an alternative day out. Centrally located and easy to explore, a trip to Dubai Zoo will make an unforgettable part of your Middle Eastern break.
