Mama Tani Cafe

Located in Dubai's Jumeirah district, this cafe offers traditional Emirati khameer bread along with a wide range of aromatic regional fillings. Mama Tani, Arabic for "second Mama", is a firm hit with locals. This should give visitors confidence that they are experiencing the authentic taste of Emirati home cooking.

Anyone who wants to enjoy a taste of traditional Dubai should visit Mama Tani cafe. This establishment was inspired by the cooking of the owners' grandmother. Growing up, they referred to her as their second Mama, or Mama Tani in Arabic. Khameer, an Emirati style of bread, is baked on the premises every day. This forms the basis of the many interesting sandwich combinations that the cafe serves.

The delicious aroma of freshly baked khameer fills the cafe. As well as enjoying the bread in sandwiches, visitors often choose to buy plain khameers hot from the oven.

Many of the sandwiches made by the team at Mama Tani involve aromatic ingredients that give added complexity to their flavour combinations. Cream cheese, coriander and roasted nuts is one of the cafe's most celebrated savoury sandwich fillings. Sweet sandwiches are also on offer, with saffron cream, dates and nuts being a particular favourite.

More recognisable, Western flavour combinations are also provided by the cafe. These include Italian fillings and egg rolls. Baked khameers with fillings including meats and cheeses are available for customers who would like something hot. It is also possible to fill a khameer with ingredients chosen by the customer.

The cafe offers a wide selection of blended cold drinks with options including rose mint lemonade and saffron pistachio shakes. There are also plenty of hot drinks to choose from, including karak, Arabic coffee, red tea and saffron milk. For adventurous guests, Mama Tani serves a cold camel milk chocolate shake and a camel milk hot chocolate.

For those with a sweet tooth, the cafe offers a range of options including traditional halwa cake and somewhat less traditional Vimto cake. These make a perfect accompaniment to a coffee for people who are just dropping in for a refreshment, or a dessert for visitors who have enjoyed a savoury khameer for lunch. Other treats include balaleets, chebabs and kunafa rolls.

It is possible to buy khameers to take away, making Mama Tani a great location for visitors who want to grab something wholesome and authentically Emirati while on the move.
