Burj Al Arab
The Burj Al Arab was designed to be recognised around the world as a defining landmark of Dubai, in as much the same way that the Eiffel Tower is for Paris or Big Ben is for London. The eye catching sail shape of the hotel has succeeded in becoming the first thing that most people think of when the city is mentioned.
The Burj Al Arab has also become renowned as the world's only seven star hotel. While technically this is untrue - as it's not possible for a hotel to be awarded more than five stars - it is a reflection of the extraordinary opulence of the building's interior.
The Burj Al Arab has a fleet of white Rolls-Royce's in its forecourt. These are available for guests to be driven to and from the hotel. Dancing fountains also embellish the entrance to the hotel and fireworks are let off whenever a 'VVIP' arrives.
Given the extravagance of the building, the Burj Al Arab has been a natural location for various publicity stunts since it was opened. These have included Andre Agassi and Roger Federer playing tennis on the helipad on the roof and David Coulthard performing doughnuts in a Formula One car in the same location.
For people who aren't guests of the hotel, the only way to gain entry is by booking a table at one of its opulent, and correspondingly expensive, restaurants. These include Al Mahara, a basement fish restaurant containing a huge sea water aquarium that is entered via a simulated submarine voyage.
Other eateries include Al Muntaha, which is located on the top floor and offers views out over the city. There is also Majlis Al Bahar, which is located on the beach, giving diners the opportunity to gaze up at the gargantuan hotel during their meals. Guests at the restaurant can choose to enjoy after dinner cocktails in the top floor cocktail bar.
For those who are fortunate enough to stay in the hotel itself, there is a private reception on every floor, along with a personalised butler service. Discreet check in within your room itself is also available.
